Is long hair unprofessional?

Yesterday I was having a casual discussion with my team, and the discussion jumped to my long hair. The discussion was that long hair are unprofessional. I was trying hard to defy the notion but everyone except me was in favour.

The arguments put forward were :

-- Long hair symbolise Rock n Roll - the rebellion and in professional world where you are bound to have a person to report to it means slower growth as your manager is sceptical about your attitude.

I said - If it is only the perception then somebody needs to take up the initiative, agreed the rock stars, rebels, taporis had long hair and have created a perception, but it is bad to generalise and over that not a very good idea to extrapolate the results. Do we have any study suggesting that people with long locks have a tendency to behave unprofessional?

-- If you keep long hair it means you are lazy and does not bother about looks, suggesting a similar attitude towards work.

I said - Long hair require more care and hence prove otherwise.

-- The norm is that people in a responsible position have short hair. (Which in fact is true, search google images for CEO, you wouldn't find any with long hair) People who need to interact with others, like politician, lawyers CEOs, need to look clean and long hairdo shows otherwise.

I said - Dr A P J Abdul Kalam , one of the most loved President of India, had long locks. And it was his acts during his presidency that he was the favourites of the masses, nobody gave a damn to his hairdo in next presidential nomination, though it was a lot discussed issue when he initially sworn in.
Arindham Chaudhary, management guru and a acclaimed speaker, can boast of a 6" pony tail.
And I am sure there are myriad others.

-- These people have proved their mettle and hence can afford to do i but if you are yet to prove yourself it might be risky.

I said - May be.Because it took some 50 years for rock stars and gangsters to create a image for themselves and we have to correct that notion so definitely would take some time.

Obviously all my above arguments fall if we try to support long un-kempt hair as professional. If they are neat, clean well -kempt there is no reason that it should look unprofessional and the safest I think is the pony tail as it gives you the desired "groomed" look also. And unfortunately mine are not long enough to have a pony tail and are curly as well, so may be I fall a bit more towards un-kempt hair category and therefore point taken is it will be more groomed and well set till they are long enough to be tied in a professional knot.
And if women with long hair are considered professional it is gross sexual discrimination against men.

Lets change the notion , Long hair rocks!!, sorry, are professional.

Well Kaushal... Your logic in favor of long hair are certainly strong. But in this world of marketing, perceptions are the only reality..

According to the laws of aerodynamics the bumble bee should never be able to fly. Because of the size, weight, and shape of its body in relationship to the total wing span, flying is scientifically impossible. The bumble bee, being ignorant of scientific theory, goes ahead and flies anyway.

Well written and neat text. My take on this will come down to addressing the score issue - Why people have a mental make up of things been in binary -0 or 1? Long hair is good/ Long hair is bad?

I would say that we all work with preconceived notions and a mental image of a thing which is supposed to be done in a certan way. In this case we have the image of a professional being neat and well styled rather than a pony.

Alluding to pony elated questions in your well written blog suggets that even you have a mental makeup (image) of a professional as clean and short hair.(Please correct me if I am wrong).

We all have notions and it takes time to break out of it unless we are really inspired by some instance or when another stronger Mental model overwrites the earlier victimised model.

I dont think long hairs have anything to do with professionalism in work space. You mention that long hair means rebellion attitude, but this word would not have been in it present state if there had been no rebels.Only a rebel will dare to challenge the inertia that exist in world.Bill Gates doesn't comb his hair, does that means he is uncultured and unprofessional. No, he was a rebel who dare to dream a PC on every table of world.Steve Jobs also defy the traditional look of a CEO.He launches new products in a pair of jeans and T-shirt.So in my view--Be a rebel, change the world and don't give a dam to those hypocrites who says that long hairs are unprofessional but their cellular keep ringing in highest possible sound in office area.
